American Graffiti

August 31, 2019

El Campanil Theater, Antioch

By Jim Seiferling

Emilia and I enjoyed another Sunday afternoon at the movies.  The movie this time was “American Graffiti”.  This time the movie was at the restored El Campanil Theater in Antioch.  It’s not as ornate as the Stockton Fox, but still very nice and well done.  They arranged with local car clubs to display their cars in front of the theater and had at least a dozen cars in the age bracket to match the movie.  People also came dressed in period clothing.  There were also a couple of tee shirts with “Pharaohs” and “Milner Racing Team” on their backs.

After the movie we had dinner at a nice Italian restaurant in downtown Pittsburg.  If you haven’t been in downtown Antioch or Pittsburg in the last 10 years you will be very surprised.  Both had a reputation in the past as being very rough towns.  Not now!  Both towns have been totally rejuvenated and are very nice and safe.  Car movies are always a good way to spend an afternoon, especially if you can be out driving your “fun” car, whatever it might be.

Meeting Notes

We had 9 members at the August meeting.  Brian and Janet Regan joined us for their first meeting with the Capitol Panteras group.  Brian has a 1972, red Pantera.  He purchased it 25 years ago from Steve Trackman in Loomis.  With the help of Gary Choate they are getting the car road worthy.  The tires are 30 years old, so new wheels and tires have been ordered and will be on the car very shortly.  Brian and Janet live in Fair Oaks.  John McNamee sold is 360 Ferrari and replaced it with a BMW i8 and had it at our meeting.  It is quite a stunning car, as can be seen in the following photos.  Having only a 91cubic inch engine is quite a departure from a Pantera engine, but it still has an electronic limited top speed of 155 MPH. and is rated at 28 MPG.

Rick has offered to have another pizza night at his shop, in the Natomas area.  There was unanimous approval of the idea.  The date will be set by Rick.

Election of officers will be held at next months meeting.  Be sure to attend and don’t be late.  At the August meeting, John Drago offered to continue on as President in 2020.

Please see the attached Word file for our Christmas lunch information.
