Rio Vista Bass Derby and Car Show

October 12, 2019

By Jim Seiferling

Our local car club, The Delta Drifters, has always had a pre Bass Derby car show dinner on Friday night.  It is usually pot luck, with a theme.  This year it was Mexican which resulted in lots of interesting dishes.  One of our members has an impressive “man cave garage” next to his house and can handle a large group.  This year we only had about 20 people.  He’s hosted over events with up to 75+ people.  Our club used to run the car show on Saturday.  The Lions club took it over from us a few years ago.  Unfortunately they didn’t have any “car guys”, so the event suffered from lack of publicity to other hot rod clubs in the area.  There was also some very questionable judging.  The most egregious example was a trophy given to an entrant for “best engine”.  The problem was the hood on that car was never open during the car show!  They also increased the exhibitor fee to a level not commensurate with other car shows.  They were after the money, and not increasing the participation.  Yes, it does take a lot of effort to put on a good show.  When we were running it, we had over 200+ cars and motorcycles attend.  This year not over 100.  The Gomez Adams School of management.  Oh well.
