Blackhawk Speaker Series, April 2, 2016

“My Life Chasing Classic Cars”, with Wayne Carini

By Emilia Seiferling

We started our morning with a drive over to the Blackhawk Museum, in Danville, to hear Wayne Carini.  Mr. Carini is the person who “chases classic cars” on the Velocity Channel.  He was the current guest speaker at the Blackhawk Museum series of automobile related speakers.  We waited for the doors of the museum to open after having arrived about 15 minutes early for the museum opening. The line went across the entry plaza and down the steps to the central area of the Blackhawk Center. The room was full, maybe about 200 people or more.

Mr. Carini was a delightful speaker to hear.  He comes across as a truly nice guy.  He related how he came to be in the classic auto business.  His father had a part-time auto repair shop while working a full time job at Pratt and Whitney.  Wayne was expected to help his father from an early age.  While he loved this time with his father, he was not so enchanted with the auto business.  While in college, he said that he went out of his way to avoid the auto business.  He said that he enjoyed his college time, while studying architecture, and did a lot of skiing. But when his father offered him a half interest in his now full time auto restoration business, Wayne could not refuse.  Needless to say, Wayne has successfully grown the family business.  The TV show came about after an article about Wayne was written in a New York paper.  A TV producer thought it could make for a good TV program and he approached Wayne.  The rest is history and Chasing Classic Cars is a big success and shown worldwide.

There were several Bay Area motor sport icons in attendance; Steve Moll, the hot rod builder from Oakland and Arlen Ness, the motorcycle builder from San Rafael.  Wayne spoke for over an hour, with no notes or power point. He ended his presentation with a series of photos of his family and the CCC series.  With each picture there was a related story. Then he answered several auto questions that the museum asks of each speaker in their series (he knew these questions in advance). Wayne then answered almost half an hour of questions from the audience.

We were at the lecture for about two hours but it seemed like just a moment of time had pasted.  It was well worth the drive to Danville. We plan to return for the next speaker on May 7, “The Executor” and the 1965 Shelby Championship Team, a presentation by Allen Grant.

If any of you plan to attend and want to do lunch after the lecture please contact us.  It should be another good day because you’re a “car guy”.

April Meeting Notes

The April meeting of Capitol Panteras was held at Mimi’s. We had 9 people attending, 4 CP members and 5 PCNC members.  Those attending were; Jim & Emilia Seiferling, Ken Montgomery, Lori & Mike Drew, Jeff Budelli, Ron Southern, Peter Kovacs, and Curt Hall.  We had one Pantera, Lori’s, and the DeLorean of Ken’s, in the parking lot.  The winner of the driving for dollars was selected by a numbers game and Ken won $10.

There was no treasurer’s report but the chapter does need to reimburse Ken for the chapter website hosting.

Jeff reported that deTomaso cars have again been invited to be featured at the Festa Italiano, Sunday August 7th.

Ken suggested that CP consider going digital with a Facebook page and Lori spoke about the PCNC Facebook page.  Think about this topic and it will be discussed further at next month’s meeting when President John is in attendance.

Rick Carlile sent us an e-mail updating us on Marcia’s medical condition.  She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in December.  She has had surgeries and is half way thru the chemo therapy which should be completed in June.  So far she is doing well and getting lots of support/encouragement from her medical friends (she is a retired nurse). Rick said to send no cards or flowers, just good thoughts to be sent to Marcia. We are all doing just that for Marcia.

Peter updated us on the PCNC plans for the Niello Concours.  They are working on a plan for a two day driving event that will end at the Concours.  It would be similar to their Ironstone driving event.  All Pantera, Mangusta, Longchamp, Vallelunga, Deauville, and Innocenti owners are invited to attend the concours since DeTomaso is the featured marquee.  There will be at least four classes of cars for the judging. The website for the event is current; please check it out at

There was some discussion and then the unanimous election of Sue & Garry Choate to represent CP at the POCA Fun Rally this year in Las Vegas in May.  Their prime duty will be to attend the Presidents Breakfast, as the chapter representative, and to purchase raffle tickets for the chapter.  The chapter voted to provide $200 to purchase the tickets.  No ticket selling will be necessary for Sue & Garry.  Lori and Mike will serve as our backup representatives if Sue & Garry can’t make it.  Any raffle prizes won at the Fun Rally will then be used as raffle prizes at our monthly meetings or may be purchased out right by the highest bidder if it is a “big ticket” item.  Thank you Sue & Garry!  Enjoy the nice breakfast.

Chit Chat from around the Table

Peter told the story of his 15 year old son Maxs’ first adventure behind the wheel of an autocross car and making some drag strip runs at Sacramento Raceway Park.

Lori drove her recently finished Pantera for its first outing in a long time this week.  They made one test trip around Lake Berryessa and to the CP meeting this evening.

PCNC has yet to find a new meeting place since the closing of Coco’s Santa Clara restaurant.  Mike hopes that the old Coco’c will reopen soon under new management, since the building appears to be being remodeled.

Ron Southern reported that he is back into racing with an old friend.  They are doing vintage racing with VARA in a formula car, RALT RT5 super VE.  It is 230 HP, a 1.8 liter GTI motor and a weight of ~980 pounds.  With a weight to horsepower ratio of 4:1 it really goes!  A stock Pantera has about a 10:1 ratio.  The car is painted in the Lotus John Player Special paint scheme; very cool.  Their next race is in Button Willow, in two weeks.

Jeff said he had to rebuild his Pantera motor after the Nello Serrano Concours, last October.  There were water and oil pressure issues that caused the failure of two valves.  There were also wiring issues that were found during the rebuild that led to a total redo of the wiring.
