A Pantera Find

February 13, 2016

By Emilia Seiferling

The weather was beautiful and our schedule was open, so Jim and I decided to do a road trip that involved several of our hobbies.  We headed out for our adventure that would included ham radio, astronomy, Panteras, and antique hunting. We were driving the truck because it has more radios in it, so we could operate during the trip.  Our route was Highway 12 to I-5 to Highway 99 to arrive at our first stop of Escalon.  Several antique shops later we continued south to Oakdale.  Once there we checked out a couple more antique shops, we stopped to investigate the Pantera that we had been told ďlivedĒ at the local Ford dealership.

At the last Pantera club meeting, Peter Kovacs told us that there was a Pantera in the showroom of Haidlen Ford in Oakdale.  We stopped at the dealer, and lo and behold there was an orange Pantera prominently displayed in the showroom.  We chatted with a salesman and he said they were the 2nd owners since 1978.  He said the gas tank was badly rusted and it wouldnít start, but the car was detailed very nice, as you would expect if you put it in your showroom.  The current odometer reading is 30372 miles.  The full s/n is THPNNR05791.  I sent this data and a few photos to Chuck Melton to add to the page for this car.  http://provamo.com/login.asp

Next we continued to the astronomy part of our trip on Highway 120.  Jim had been told about a site between Oakdale and Sonora which had only recently been brought to the attention of our astronomy clubsí attention.  We checked it out and found it to be a dark site but with limited views to the horizon.  The location also had the potential of being a ďquiteĒ radio site, but its location in a valley made it less than desirable, even with its radio quite location.  We continued our trek to Sonora to have lunch.  Since it was such nice weather, down town Sonora was very busy but we were able to get a prime parking spot near our selected restaurant.  We enjoyed a very nice lunch at the Light House Cafť.  After lunch we walked the entire downtown area checking out all the various shops.  After Sonora we started working our way home.  Our final antique stop was Jamestown, which by the way was named after a Mr. James.  Overall our antique quest had been successful, I found a total of 9 of my Christmas wreath pins, one piece of my Carnival glass pattern, and two cat cookie jars that I collect.  Jim did not go home empty handed.  He found three books, one on radio, one on astronomy and one cookbook.  All shopped out we continued down the hill to the Valley.  We stopped to try a new restaurant, for us, in Modesto; Farmers Catfish House Restaurant.  We called it our Valentine dinner out.  We had been afraid that it would be a bad spur of the moment decision since it was Saturday night the day before Valintineís Days without reservation. But we lucked out! We enjoyed a great dinner and got it at the $8 senior rate.

By now we were ready to head home.  It had been a busy day doing all the things that we enjoy.  And it was a day inspired by all the things that we enjoy.  We hope you all have days like this, at least once in a while

February Meeting Notes

The February meeting of Capitol Panteras was held at Mimiís. We had only 7 members attending.  Those attending were; Jim & Emilia Seiferling, John McNamee, Ken Montgomery, Rick Carlile, Peter Kovacs, and Curt Hall. It was nice to have Peter and Curt at our meeting.  They have made the drive to our meeting before.  Please note that all Pantera people are welcome at CP meeting.  We had no Panteras in the parking lot, thus there was no driving for gas dollars money.

The CP meeting for April has been changed to the first Tuesday of the month, April 5.  It will be at Mimiís.  We will be joining the British Car Club.  Please note that dinner is at 6 PM and the meeting starts at 7 PM.

Peter, who is a PCNC member, related that the hunt for a new PCNC meeting place in the Bay Area continues.  The place they tried in January was not successful.  Both the room situation and the parking were not good.  More on this breaking story as it develops.

The treasury has $857.91.  Please send any unpaid invoices to John.

The Association of California Car Clubs, of which we are a member, sent out a notice about a new rule from the EPA that affects all auto enthusiasts.  The EPA wants to prohibit the conversion of street cars into dedicated race track cars.. The regulation would also make the sale of certain products for use on such vehicles illegal.  See this link; https://www.sema.org/news/2016/02/08/epa-seeks-to-prohibit-conversion-of-vehicles-into-racecars

Capitol Panteras will need some one to represent CP at the POCA Fun Rally this year in Las Vegas in May. So if you are planning on going, please contact President John.  Your prime duty would be to attend the Presidents Breakfast, as the chapter representative, and to purchase raffle tickets for the chapter.  The chapter will provide the funds for the tickets.

President John told the group that he had met a new potential member.  John could only remember his first name; Ferris. yes, like "Ferris Bueller's Day Off".  He just bought a Pantera out of Texas.  Hopefully he will join us at a future meeting.

John also confirmed that Steve Wilkinson will be a judge at Serrano this October.  Panteras will be the honored marquee the first weekend in October.  http://www.nielloconcoursatserrano.com/index.html

The best story of the evening was President John telling his tale of how he came to be the head of McNamee Automotive.  John is now your go to man for all of your wholesale automotive needs!  This is not a paid advertisement.
