Concert at the Blackhawk Museum, June 14th

By Jim Seiferling

We received a postcard from the Museum on a very unusual upcoming event.  It was a concert played on one of three sets of Chinese bells called Bianzhong.  This set was cast from the original bells buried 2,400 years ago and unearthed in 1978.   They ranged in size from about the size of a 55 gallon oil drum to small ones about 6” long.  There was also a set of tuned flat stones called Bianqing, played like a xylophone. There was also a drum, a flute like instrument with a set of vertical pipes (similar to a pipe organ) and a 25 plucked-string instrument.  Since their tonal scale is called a pentatonic scale, with five notes per octave, their music sounds very different than our 7 note scale.  They played a number of selections of Chinese music and ended with Beethoven’s’ Ode to Joy.  By judicious selection of the correct bells, the 7 note scale could be replicated.  See this YouTube link;

The concert coincided with the opening of a new section of the museum, displaying the collection of Chinese artifacts collected by Ken Behring, the founder of the Blackhawk.  You all know that the car collection is an “oh wow”, but this collection from China doubles that.  It’s truly unbelievable and should be put on your list of things to see, right in our own backyard.

Raduno, El Dorado Hills, July 11th

By Jim & Emilia Seiferling

Well, no report here.  We were in Long Beach from the 7th to the 10th.  Emilia had the opportunity to operate amateur radio, from the radio room on the Queen Mary, with a small group of lady radio operators; pretty cool.  We got home late Monday afternoon, after 950 miles on the road, and were tuckered out.  The idea of fighting highway 50 eastbound traffic, at rush hour, to El Dorado Hills in peak afternoon +100 degree heat, just didn’t appeal to us.  Hopefully someone that did attend the Raduno will send us an article & photo(s) on the event (hint, hint).

Post Raduno Notes

Both Emilia and Rick Carlile have entered the ranks of retiree’s.  Emilia’s last day in her dental practice, of 37.5 years, was June 29th.  We also received a note from Rick that he has retired from his architecture business.  He’s already keeping busy prepping the TVR for the upcoming races in Portland, July 27-30.  Carl Stein and Emilia share the same birthday and year; 7/2/50.  Carl is starting a new business with his son; a pool cleaning service.  He’s also looking into a possible partnership with a brewery.  We’ll look forward to that, if it pans out!  Maybe a Pantera on the label?  How cool would that be?
