Blackhawk Speaker Series, May 7, 2016
“’The Executor’, and the 1965 Shelby Championship Team”, with Allen Grant
By Emilia Seiferling
We started our morning with a drive over to the Blackhawk Museum, in Danville, to hear Allen Grant. He was the current guest speaker at the Blackhawk Museum series of automobile related speakers. We parked and proceeded to the lower lot car show, full of Shelby Mustangs and Cobras. We didn’t do a full walk around, fearing another long entrance line similar to what we experienced last month when Wayne Carini was the speaker. Our fears were unfounded because everyone was down at the car show. The Blackhawk staff even opened up the museum early and we were able to explore the upstairs section of the museum which is devoted to the founding of the American west. It is very well done, as you’d expect, and we’ll have to plan to spend an hour or two going through it at a later date. By the time Allen was ready to speak, the lecture area was full, with about 200 people or more. The museum always provides free coffee & tea to everyone attending these lectures.
Mr. Grant had the good fortune to be in auto racing at the perfect time. He related his history of growing up in California’s Central Valley, in Modesto. It turns out that he was a childhood friend of George Lucas. He and George grew up working on cars and their friendship continues to this day. It was George who created the distinctive color scheme for Allen’s first Cobra race car. Allen outlined how his racing career developed with Carroll Shelby and the Cobra. He spoke about the famous 1965 Shelby Championship Team and his part in it. He also told us how he came to leave racing. Allen had promised his father that he would finish college if he went racing. After the 1965 racing year, he opted to return to Fresno State to finish his degree. After graduating, when he was ready to return to racing, there had been a down sizing at Shelby. Allen then began his business career, where he was very successful. He then answered almost half an hour of questions from the audience.
The Cobra show was moved up to the Museum Plaza
(The Shelby Mustangs filled the other half of the plaza)
It was well worth the drive to Danville. We plan to return for the next speaker, when the series resumes in September.
If any of you plan to attend and want to do lunch after the lecture please contact us. It should be another good day because you’re a “car guy”.
May Meeting Notes
The May meeting of Capitol Panteras was held at Mimi’s. We had 8 people attending. Those attending were; Pres. John McNamee, Jim & Emilia Seiferling, Ken Montgomery, Jeff Budelli, John & Beth Drago, and new Pantera owner Ferris Nazeri, DMD. We also had two club cars in the parking lot; John’s Ferrari and Jeff’s Pantera, but we forgot to do the driving for dollars drawing and too few people for the raffle.
Welcome to the group, Ferris. Dr. Ferris is an endodontist in Sacramento. He has a red 1974 Pantera, which he bought out of Texas. It is currently in the shop to correct some items that needed attention. He hopes to be able to drive it very soon. Ferris got interested in Panteras after viewing a video by Jay Leno, with Mike Drew, about the Pantera. It looks like we have the dental profession wrapped up in the Capitol Panteras’ group; Sue, dental assistant, Lori, dental hygienist, Emilia, general dentist, and Ferris, endodontist.
There treasurer’s report stated that we have $982.00 in our account. The group voted at the meeting to make the following payments/donations. $35 - Meals on Wheels
$125 – California Auto Museum – membership renewal
$65 - ACCC – membership renewal
$200 – POCA Rally tickets
$72 - Website fees – Paid to Ken
President John plans to attend the PCNC June meeting to promote the Concourse at Serrano this October. Ken suggested that there be a Pantera dinner associated with the event. It would make for a gathering spot where everyone could meet and greet and get to know each other better.
Ken also suggested that CP consider going digital with a Facebook page and Lori previously spoke about the PCNC Facebook page. Think about this topic and it will be discussed further at next month’s meeting. We forgot to do this at the May meeting, so maybe next month.
President John reminded us of the Niello Serrano Concourse, October 2nd. All Pantera, Mangusta, Longchamp, Vallelunga, Deauville, and Innocenti owners are invited to attend the concours since DeTomaso is the featured marque. There will be at least four classes of cars for the judging. The website for the event is current; please check it out at http://www.nielloconcoursatserrano.com/index.html
President John passed out several new POCA pamphlets to give out to prospective new members. These should be taken with you to any car event you attend and given to interested people.
