Spring Newsletter 2013

(January, February, March)

Christmas Party, 2012

The 2012 Christmas party was held at the home of member Paul Bowden.  The theme for the gathering was Modena. Paul suggested this theme in honor of his mother and DeTomaso.  Paul asked his sister Colleen to prepare some special Italian dishes for our dinner.  We all owe her a very big Thank You!  All of her efforts made the evening something to remember.

Paul prepared a written menu, complete with subtitles, for our evening in Modena.

        Tagliatelle Con Salsa "Maria Cavarriani"

(Tagliatelle with sauce "Mary Cavarriani")

Cotechino Con Lenticchie

(Pork Sausage with Lentils)

Farcite Di LMaialino Con Polenta

(Stuffed Pork Roll with Polenta)

Aspargi Al Burro

(Asparagus with butter)

Finnoochio Al Formaggio

(Fennel with Cheese)

The meal was supplemented with additional side dishes and several festive desserts, which were brought by members.

The gift exchange followed the Italian theme of the evening.  Everyone did very well with their interpretation of the theme.  Italian themed gifts included: Italian wine, olive oil, pasta, and Italian movie DVD's.  The DeTomaso colored afghan was taken home by Lamar.

Our thanks again to Paul and his sister for making it a fun evening for everyone.  Those of you who were unable to attend missed a wonderful even of food and fellowship.  It was yet another memory made possible because you own a Pantera!

Micro Cars at the California Auto Museum

Jim and I attended the opening day for the "Pint Sized" auto exhibit at the California Auto Museum.  I have always loved small cars, so when I first read of this exhibit I marked the calendar.  We were not disappointed with the exhibit.  There were almost 20 cars on display.  Among the marques on display were: BMW, Crosley, Honda, Cooper, Subaru, Messerschmitt, Heinkel, Vespa, and Fiat.  Each vehicle had a brief history and interesting facts.  Did you know that the Isetta saved BMW from bankruptcy in 1959?

The other special exhibit was "1968".  It was mainly American muscle cars.  The display area was surrounded by a automotive historical timeline.  The timeline listed the numerous automotive innovations and laws that happened in 1968.  It was very interesting reading.  It included such items as side marker lights and  front seat and shoulder belts.

The exhibits will be at the museum :  Micro Cars thru April 21, 2013

                                                              1968 thru May 12, 2013

If you are paid member of Capitol Panteras, you can use your membership to enter the Museum for FREE.

The original Fiat 500.

Notice the height difference to Emilia's shoulders to our new car in the next photo.

The new version got significantly taller.

Were we surprised to see our donated Capri parked inside the museum!

You can bid to buy the 1991 Capri on ebay.  The money goes to the museum and you receive a certificate good for a charity donation on your taxes when you donate a car.

Meeting Notes

The Capitol Panteras held their third meeting of 2013 at Mimi's on March 12, 2013.

The January meeting was run by Treasurer John, the February meeting was run by web master Ken, and our March meeting was run by past co-president Emilia.  We thank everyone for stepping up, in the absence of President George.

Here are notes taken by Ken Montgomery at the February meeting.

February 2013 meeting - Acting Prez: Ken (because more than one person pointed at me).

Jim and Emilia went to the micro car and 1968 car exhibits at the auto museum - ~20 micro cars and the 1968 exhibit was mostly muscle cars. They attended free of charge because Capitol Panteras is a paid supporter of the museum.  We are also allowed to have one club meeting a year there for free and we will do so after daylight savings time so we can bring our club cars along.

Driving for Dollars:
Since there was only one club car in attendance (Lamar's), we don't usually have a Driving for dollars raffle. However, a vote was taken to do it anyway. The vote was 6 yes, 1 no, and one abstain. The raffle was then held, including Emilia's Abarth, Ken's Mini, and Ron's Mustang. - Emilia's Abarth won.

The raffle for a DeTomaso jacket took in $43 and was won by visiting Pantera owner Mike Ronald, from Napa.

Mike and Lori are planning to get married at the next POCA Rally in Phoenix.

Items on the calendar for the next couple months were reviewed.

We thank both John and Ken for their efforts in running the previous two meetings.  The newsletter editors just did not have their act together to get the January and February newsletters out in a timely manner due to major sewer problems on our 120 year old house and other issues that we needed to deal with at home; thus the "Spring Newsletter" title of this issue.  We will be back to our regular monthly schedule for the April newsletter.  That said, here are the particulars of the March 2013 meeting.

The group arrived at Mimi's to find no cones in the parking lot.  This was unfortunate since we had four club cars at the meeting.  In the running for "Driving for Gas $" were Lamar Fairchild, Ken Montgomery, John McNamee. and Ken Whittall-Scherfee.  The lucky winner was Lamar.  If the cones had been out it would have been a good show with three Panteras, Kens' DeLorean, and our Abarth.

The total attendance was very good with 16 people present.  Those that came in their daily drivers were; Emilia & Jim Seiferling, Jeff Budelli & son Steve, Mike & Nancy Haney, Lamar Fairchild & Mila, John Worsley, Ron Southern, Mike Ronald, Chris Difani, and Rick Moseley.  It was great to see Rick!

The raffle was a good one.  Treasurer John brought four great deTomaso apparel items from his shop.  The winner got first pick this week and that was Jeff.  He selected the 1/4 zip sweatshirt with the deTomaso logo.  At the next meeting, April 9th, the winner of the raffle will have a choice of one of the three remaining items.  This will continue for the two following meetings.  Be sure to attend in order to have a chance to win one of John's apparel items.  John also made good for last month raffle winner, Mike Ronald, by delivering a fleece jacket in the correct size.  These are some great items, thank you John.

Treasurer John reported that the Club is very sound financially with $1572 in the bank.  He also reported he renewed the Capitol Panteras membership at the California Automobile Museum.  With the Club membership the Capitol Pantera members receive one free admission to the museum.  And yes our Club banner is on display with the other car club banners (Thank you to Mike Haney for making it)!  The group voted to also renew our membership with the Association of California Car Clubs, which lobbies for the car club hobby.

Two additional new outings are now on the calendar.  Nancy will be in charge of a coast drive in June.  She will modify a route from the AutoZotica drives from a number of years ago.  The exact date will be set at the April meeting.  Ken Whittall-Scherfee will be working on a drive to the Auburn area, a visit to the Air Museum at McClellan, and a BBQ at his airplane (Navion) hanger at McClellan.  The date is tentative for now, on July 27.  Thank you Nancy and Ken.  A possible third item is "Wings & Wheels" of Sacramento; John McNamee will get us the date and details at the April meeting.

Jeff confirmed the Festa Italiana is on August 3-4 2013 and he is the car display chairman again.  Capitol Panteras have been asked to be part of the Sunday display.  You can drive your Pantera or other Italian car or motorcycle.  More details as we get closer to August.

Rick Carlile had old friends from Nashville visiting and was unable to attend the meeting, but our yearly tech session is still set for Saturday, April 13, at his office/shop in downtown Sacramento.  We will need a head count at the April meeting.  Tech inspections and various smaller fix-it projects can be done at the session. Rick is a certified POCA tech inspector for POCA open track events.  The Club will provide donuts at the start and take-out for lunch. Mark your calendars to attend this event.

The Club calendar has been up dated to reflect the changes from all three meetings.
