Blackhawk Museum Speaker Series
By Jim & Emilia Seiferling
We started going to the museum’s speaker series in November 2015, when Matt Stone (former POCA president) was the speaker. We learned that if you’re a senior, there is a major discount for being an annual member. With the expanding speaker series this became a no-brainer and paid for itself very quickly, compared to the regular admission price. As an added benefit, you also become an associate member of the Smithsonian, which includes reciprocal benefits at all Smithsonian organizations in the USA, Puerto Rico, and Panama. Below is a list of the people we’ve heard. Unfortunately we missed Danny Sullivan, George Follmer, and Steve Moal, but we did see Steve at Wayne Carini’s talk. The talks start at 10:30, on a Saturday, and last about 1 ½ to 2 hours, followed with both a Q&A session and autograph session. If you have questions for them, all the speakers are easily accessible either before or after their talk. If there is a special car associated with the speaker, the museum attempts to bring that car to the museum to have on display at their talk.
81 year old “Quick Vic” Elford and his Porsche 908/3
We’ve run into fellow Pantera members at some of these talks; Steve & Mary Dalcino and Russ & Doris Britschgi. We’re fortunate that living in Rio Vista, the drive to the museum is only 50 minutes, now that the rebuilding of highway 4, through Antioch, is now completed. For our Pantera friends in the Napa/Vacaville or the south bay area, it’s also only about 50 miles to the museum.
The upper level of the museum is devoted to early western history and is done with the same class as the car portion. There are two upcoming speakers on western history; April 22 “A History of Firearms 1500 to 1900 and Colt Revolvers” and on April 29th, “Art of the American Frontier”.
On May 13th, the automotive talk will be by motorsports photographer David Friedman (staff photographer for Shelby American, Inc. and Ford Motor Co. documenting the GT-40 LeMans races). Concurrently there will be a car show by Team Shelby, Pacific Coast Region, for their 4th Annual Carroll Shelby Memorial Classic Car Show. This should be a good one. On July 8th, Donald Osborne (as seen on Jay Leno’s show) will be talking. Jay Ward, from Pixar (movie, Cars) will be speaking in June/July, date TBA.
All the speakers we’ve heard
Matt Stone; Heroes, Legends and Friends
Bill Warner; The Cars of Cuba
Wayne Carini; "My Life Chasing Classic Cars..."
Allen Grant; Working for Carol Shelby and the Team Shelby 50th Anniversary car show
Tom Cotter; Automotive Writer; Barn Finds

Vic Elford; Legendary Endurance Racer
David Fetherston; History of Bonneville

Capitol Panteras Christmas Party
December 4
By Jim Seiferling
John Drago graciously stepped up and organized our Christmas party at The Old Spaghetti Factory in Rancho Cordova. The restaurant put a limit on us of 30. We filled all the spots with a total of 31 RSVP’ing and only 2 no shows, so we had a total of 29. The gift exchange was a lot of fun. As you may remember, the theme was for the gift exchange to be a new or gently used automotive related book. This idea was interpreted in a variety of different ways. There were no duplicate books. The topics ranged from a driving tour book, 365 cars you must drive by Matt Stone, the history of Corvair, the history of DeLorean, muscle cars, Italian cars, etc.. There was a lot of “stealing” of gifts. This was a fun and easy theme for our gift exchange. We want to thank Kim Christiansen for the photos of the event. If you were not there you missed a great gathering.
Club Meeting Schedule (from the November meeting)
Because of the low attendance in the past year, at the November meeting, we discussed how we would proceed in the future. We decided to have no meetings in January, February, and March. We will then have monthly meetings from April to November and have a Christmas party in December. The winter months have always had low attendance, because of normal winter weather (rain and fog).
Meeting Notes
President John called the meeting to order. We had 13 people present. We’d like to thank Mike & Lori Drew, Peter Kovacs, and Curt Hall for making the long(ish) drive to our meeting. He thanked everyone that attended the Christmas party; 29 total, and John Drago for doing the legwork setting up the party. President John would like to have our group concentrate on one event in the following year, like a car show or some other event. He’d like to have everyone attend at least one day at the POCA rally in Monterey, from May 31 to June 4. After kicking around ideas around the table, there was a consensus to do the Ironstone Concours, September 23rd. The PCNC group also tries to make this a chapter event, so there will be good showing of Panteras at the event. Sue Choate also volunteered to plan a group lunch/dinner, probably sometime in the September/October time frame, after the summer heat has subsided. Mike Drew really liked our previous combined lunches with both PCNC & Reno/Tahoe Pantera chapters joining us. He will try and set this up for a combined get together this year.
We also talked about how to raise money. Our main source is money received back from POCA for each member. Our only additional money is from monthly raffles and associate member dues. To that extent, the following people paid their associate dues at this meeting; Mike & Lori Drew, Sue & Garry Choate, Peter Kovacs, & Curt Hall. We also did a cash raffle, with Mike Drew winning one half of the pot. He won $24 and that left a profit of $24 to our treasury. We did our “driving for dollars” raffle. Both Rick Carlile and Steve Christiansen drove their Panteras to the meeting. Steve was the winner this evening, and won the $10 prize money. Ken Montgomery suggested that we have a Facebook page, to help get future members. I’m not sure if anyone in our group is into Facebook, but we’d welcome someone so interested to step up and setup/manage this social media.
